Microaggressions are everyday slights, snubs, “jokes”, or insults (intentional or unintentional) that communicate hostile, derogatory, or harmful messages to people based on their group membership.

Participants will learn how to recognize and interrupt microaggressions, why taking action to prevent microaggressions is important, and how to handle it constructively when a microaggression occurs.

Course Objectives

Participants will be able to :

  • Define the term “microaggression” and “microaffirmation” and provide several examples of each
  • Identify the microaggression in common case examples
  • Recognize subtle microaggressions
  • Describe the impact of microaggressions

Participants will learn effective strategies including:

  • Techniques to minimize the occurrence of microaggressions
  • Ways to respond when microaggressions occur
  • Inclusive strategies for constructively responding to “othering” and microaggressions in the workplace
